Common Problem Analysis

What causes blistering on wood veneer laminated profiles during UV coating line finishing?

Main causes and solutions:

• The wood veneer itself has excessively high oil/grease content and separates from the substrate under high temperature.

• The adhesive used to bond the non-woven backing to the wood veneer has low heat resistance, causing separation between the non-woven backing and the veneer during UV processing, or the veneer composite adhesive is not waterproof and delaminates during water-based UV processing. For bonding the backing and wood veneer, it is recommended to use at least a D3 waterproof grade adhesive for better reliability.

• The heat resistance and adhesion of the laminating hot melt adhesive must meet the high-temperature strength requirements of the UV line. PO-type hot melt adhesives or PUR hot melt adhesives are recommended.

• The pressure wheels of the laminating equipment must ensure even and appropriate pressure on every area. Otherwise, areas with insufficient or no pressure can easily form false bonding, leading to blistering during UV coating.

What causes blistering when laminating PVC with PUR?

Main causes and solutions:

• Impurity particles in the adhesive or dust contamination in the production environment forming particles in the adhesive.

• The profile substrate has not been cleaned properly; areas with contamination are not cleaned, resulting in poor bonding and blistering.

• The adhesive viscosity is too high, resulting in poor leveling; the adhesive may not be applied to some areas of the PVC sheet during coating.

• The heat resistance of the adhesive is insufficient, causing the adhesive layer to delaminate and blister in higher temperature environments.
